ALL THE NEWS THATS FIT TO SING

News? You want news? We got it. First and foremost, the big announcement is: Radio 4 is working with writer/filmmaker Antonino D'Ambrosio to create an original score and soundtrack for D'Ambrosio's documentary project, Let Fury Have the Hour. Executive produced by Tim Robbins and produced by Amnesty International and TAR-ARTS, Let Fury Have the Hour is based on the ideas and concepts of D'Ambrosio's critically acclaimed book of the same name. The documentary features the Clash, Rachid Taha and Manu Chao each of whom have produced groundbreaking music that has shaped a critical cultural movement promoting world citizenship and humanism. The original soundtrack and score will include Chuck D, Moby, Ted Leo, Mos Def, Antibalas among other special musical collaborations. Groundbreaking artist Shepard Fairey will contribute original art and design. You can also see what billboard.com had to say about the project.... Additionally, we have shows at the end of May and the beginning of June - you can check the show section for those dates. We will also be joining Jesse Malin for a benefit for abused children check freeartsnyc.org in New York City at the Highline ballroom on Wednesday June 6...Tuesday, June 5 Astralwerks is releasing a three song EP which will include the Brothers' remix of As Far As the Eye Can See, Jagz Kooner's remix of "This is Not a Test" and Nick Forte's remix of "Grass Is Greener"....The Callum Robbins benefit was an absolute musical joy - we understand a healthy amount of money was raised (esp. considering it was during the worst nor'easter in NYC history) and great sets by the Annuals, Harmony Rockets and of course the legendary Bob Mould...Finally, for all that have been asking if that's us in the coming attraction for the show "Rescue Me' on FX, the answer is YES - Start A Fire is the song's name. More to come...

CALLUM ROBBINS BENEFIT

Radio 4 would like to announce that our next show at the Bowery Ballroom on Monday April 16, is a benefit for Callum Robbins, son of Jawbox frontman J. Robbins, who has been diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy. It needs to be said that in the early to mid 90's there wasn't a better band out there than Jawbox, they had great melodies and lyrics, a real true sense of when dissonance should be used, and tremendous power - I spent many a night at CBGB's shaking my head at what a force the band could be. Needless to say they were a big influence on the members of Radio 4 at very important periods of our lives. We are more than happy to help J. in any way possible, and you could too by going to the link provided and donating some much needed funds. Joining us on the bill will be Bob Mould (!), the Harmony Rockets, and other special guests. This show will sell out and is for a very good cause so please get your tickets soon. Otherwise, we are currently hunkered down in the Salt Mines writing songs for the next R4 album, which will hopefully be appearing sooner than later.

February 01
THE NORTH 6 CANCELLATION

Nobody could have been as upset about the North 6 show being canceled

as the members of Radio 4, who were greatly looking forward to the

gig and were thrilled to have The Big Sleep and Free Blood on the

same bill. The North 6 web site (www.northsix.com) explains,

"ConEdison disconnected power to the building one day too early,"

though it may not be as simple as that. We understand that there was

also an issue of an enormous unpaid electricity bill, which prompted

ConEd to disconnect ahead of schedule. Bowery Presents, which was

taking over the venue as of midnight, tried hard to get the power up

and running under its own name and we were encouraged to believe they would be successful, but at 5:30pm, and with the venue still in the

dark, the decision was reluctantly made to cancel the show. The

promoters at North 6, who were not responsible for the unpaid bill,

were equally unhappy about this chain of events.

Again, we apologize. This one was totally out of our control. And the

last thing we wanted. See you out there somewhere.

January 31
North 6 show canceled

Due to circumstances entirely beyond our control, tonight's show at North 6 has been canceled. We apologize profusely to all and are extremely upset about this ourselves. If you bought tickets, please take it up with the venue. We will explain the circumstances fully later. Thanks to everyone for continued support.

January 17
FREE BLOOD FOR NORTH 6

We are thrilled that Free Blood have agreed to join Radio 4 for North 6's closing show on January 31. Free Blood features John and Gorman from !!! and their friend Madeleine; you can check out their music at www.myspace.com/freeblood. The line-up for the Williamsburg venue's final show is now an all-Brooklyn one: Radio 4, The Big Sleep and Free Blood. Advance tickets are on sale here. The North 6 website is @ http://www.northsix.com

January 09
RADIO 4 IN SPAIN

Radio 4 will be returning to Spain at the end of January for two shows. On Friday January 26, they will be playing the Mallorca City Feasts (located in the city of Palma de Mallorca) in the great outdoors on the Plaza de España open air stage. The show is a mini-festival with three local bands. On Saturday January 27, they will be headlining the Murcia Auditorium. The band will be performing in Sala M2 in the Auditorio Regional. Full information on the Murcia show is available here. Our thanks to David at Love To Art for bringing the group over again: this will be Radio 4's fourth visit to Spain since the release of Enemies Like This.

January 08
THE BIG SLEEP AT NORTH 6

We are pleased to announce that The Big Sleep will be joining Radio 4 at North Six on January 31, the final show at this Williamsburg institution. The Brooklyn trio recently toured with The Hold Steady; their new album Son of The Tiger is out now on FrenchKiss Records. You can hear/view more about The Big Sleep at http://thebigsleep.net/home.html and http://www.myspace.com/sonofthetiger. Expect a third act to be announced any day.

January 03
RADIO 4 CLOSE OUT NORTH 6

On Wednesday January 31, Radio 4 will headline the last ever show at

North Six in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg. North Six opened back in the

1990s, when Williamsburg was still being “discovered” as a happening

‘hood; along with its neighbor Galapagos, the venue did much to do

with making the area a musical mecca. A list of all the bands that

have played North 6 would read like a Who’s-Who of both the New York

Cty and international music scenes, and Radio 4 feel highly honored

to be closing out the venue. This will be your last ever chance to

experience a show from the famous North Six bleachers.

Tickets are on sale now at $13 advance. They can be purchased direct

through the North 6 web site. www.northsix.com Show is 18+. Support acts will be announced any day.

January 02
HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM RADIO 4

Happy New Year from Radio 4. The group ticked the calendar over by

playing ‘Calling All Enthusiasts’ at a packed Mercury Lounge in

New York City. If you were in the audience, you’ll know what a good

time everyone had. If you were in the audience and ended up on stage

during the encore of ‘1999’, you might recognize yourself in the

picture below. If you look close enough you might even see one or two

of the band onstage!

We’ve more news on more shows and recordings right around the

corner. In the meantime, the following reflections on 2006 are taken

from manager Tony Fletcher’s website, www.ijamming.net.

“For Radio 4, 2006 was the year they finished recording and then

released the album ‘Enemies Like This,’ produced in Brooklyn and

London by Jagz Kooner. A purposefully raw record deliberately kept to

ten songs and forty minutes, it was intended to bring the sound away

from the over-production that had haunted their previous album

‘Stealing Of A Nation,’ get them a little closer to the minimalism

of their celebrated album 'Gotham!', and yet take them a step further

into their future. We would all like to think it succeeded. Reviews

were up and down: if we showed you the breadth of the coverage, which

ran all the way from 5 stars down to 2, you might never take a music

journalist seriously again. (Hopefully you wouldn’t take him or her

too seriously to begin with.)

We learned to trust audience reactions. Radio 4 spent the second half

of 2006 almost entirely on the road: they toured Europe no less than

four times, America twice, and we all shared a wonderfully hectic 36

hours in Brazil. They shared stages with New Order, Franz Ferdinand,

the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Placebo, The Rapture, Art Brut, Belle and

Sebastian, !!!, The Bravery and TV On The Radio. They appeared on the

TV shows Last Call With Carson Daly in the States, on Rockpalast in

Germany, and on Le Culture Club in France among others. They recorded

sessions for BBC’s Radio2 sand 6 Music, for XFM, and for key

American stations KEXP, WOXY and WFMU. (You can see videos and hear

radio sessions via www.r4ny.com/music.) A five-year old B-side was

used for a Nike World Cup commercial (the one featuring England’s

disastrous ‘Boy Wonder’ Wayne Rooney), a new song was used in an

American TV show as a last minute replacement for The Who, and main

man Anthony Roman’s year was rendered complete when his comments

on ‘Know Your Rights’ were plastered across a page in The Clash

singles box set. The DFA remix of ‘Dance To The Underground’ was

featured on The DFA Remixes: Chapter 1, and DFA producer/LCD

Soundsystem front man James Murphy even DJ’d guitarist Dave

Milone’s birthday party.

The DFA came to acclaim mixing Radio 4’s first real album, Gotham!,

and though they don’t like remixing an act more than once,

Murphy’s partner, Tim Goldsworthy, made an exception for the

single ‘Packing Things Up On The Scene’ under his new guise The

Loving Hand. His upbeat dance mixes were released as a 12” single

(and for digital download) in October; his dub mix went unheard until

being made available for free download over the holidays. It’s Radio

4’s way of saying thanks for all the support this past year.

Here’s looking forwards and onwards to a great 2007.

Web assistance needed

We're looking for a committed, web-savvy Radio 4 enthusiast who would like to help out with this web site and possibly the myspace page too. As you may have noticed, while we keep the News and Shows sections up to date, we're finding it hard to do the same with the press cuttings, music links, photos, videos and so on. If there's someone out there who has the time to keep these parts of the site fully up to date we'd love to hear from you. Direct your mail to info-at-r4ny.com, put 'Web Site help wanted' in the header and give us as much info about yourself as you can - especially if you already run a web site or blog. Thanks.

November 17
New US Dates

Anthony Roman writes:

Just got back from an enjoyable run through Spain, France and England. Highlights a plenty:-our first club tour of Spain was met with more enthusiasm than we could've ever anticipated. They were all great shows, and we played a particularly great show in Madrid followed by a full on R4 after party thrown by the lovely people of EMI Spain. Thanks to them and everyone at Love To Art for a great four days.

France has always been good to us, but we haven't been to Bordeaux or Nantes since our tour with Out Hud in 2003 so we were pleased to see so many friendly faces there. Paris found us at a rammed new venue La Maroquinerie out on the outskirts of town, and it was Halloween, and Max Heyes was there, and the bar never closed, and then we went to the Truskel and well.. you know how that all ended.

The UK? Despite being cold and dark (honestly, it felt like it was getting dark at three oclock) we managed to have some fun. New things for us included being invited on the Janice long show on Radio 2, recording a session for 6 Music which goes out the week of November 20, and playing Dingwalls, which pleased the traditionalist in me because my uncle had played there some twenty five years ago with his band the BMT's opening for the Polecats. It is nice to know there are still venues left in London, let alone Camden, that we haven’t played yet. Next stop Koko!

Upon our return home we found ourselves on the Carson Daly show performing ‘This Is Not A Test’ - and now we're heading out on an eight show east coast run. That should take us to end of the year. As for 2007-watch this space!

East Coast tour:

(All shows are with The Bravery, except DC.)

11/28 Boston - Avalon

11/29 New York – Webster Hall

11/30 Philadelphia - Trocadero

12/1 Washington DC - Rock'n'Roll Hotel

12/2 Raleigh, NC- Lincoln Theater

12/4 Charleston - Music Farm

12/5 Atlanta - Roxy

Radio 4 news: Single release/DFA remix/Cool B-sides/Tour

Anthony Roman writes:

"We are happy to announce the release of our new single 'Packing Things Up On the Scene,' out in the UK next Monday, October 23, and available through import and for digital download elsewhere. Included with the new single are two brand new tracks we did at the Brothers studio in Brooklyn. One of the tracks 'Pretty good Lie' (on the CD single) was inspired by a deadly flood that took place this summer in Livingston Manor in upstate New York. 'Take Anything' (on the 7" single) is inspired by a quote from Virginia Woolf about the constraints of society. These songs are exclusive b-sides, the newest Radio 4 songs out there, and represent something of a new direction too. We're really happy with them. Also, our old friend Tim Goldsworthy (1/2 of the production duo the DFA), did some great remixes for us. They're already making noise on the UK dancefloors; you can pick up these 'Loving Hand' remixes on a 12" version of the single. Last but not least, Tim Sutton shot a great video for us and it even involves a little acting on our part. Check out Milone: he takes his part very seriously.

The video is up on our MySpace page (www.myspace.com/radio4), and at YouTube too. We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming shows in Spain, France and the UK. Full details of the shows are at www.r4ny.com/shows.

If you know anything about the British chart scene you will know that first week's sales are everything. If you think you might get our new single, in any format, you'll do the band an enormous favor by ordering it now/buying it the day it comes out. It's just the way the world works. 'Packing Things Up On The Scene' is available for order online at hmv.co.uk, virginmegastore.co.uk, iTunes UK and USA and pretty much every other major and indie retail outlet you can think of. Thanks for your support."

Reminder: Fopp Instore Monday October 23

A reminder for London-based Radio 4 enthusiasts, the group will be playing a special live set at the Fopp record store at Shaftesbury Avenue/Earlham Street this Monday October 23, at 6:30pm sharp. Rather than the typical acoustic show, the group are bringing down a full back line. It should be loud, it should be crowded, it should be fun. More info at the fopp site here:

Radio 4: an apology

Radio 4 wishes to apologize to all fans in the Dallas area for having to cancel the show at The Gypsy Tea Rooms on Friday June 9 - which was also meant to be the first night of the American tour. Unfortunately, the group's van broke down in Arkansas on Thursday night and the breakdown proved too major to be fixed in time to make the long run on to Dallas. This is the very first time Radio 4 has suffered this kind of transport trouble and, in all the group's time of touring, only the second show that has ever been canceled at such short notice. Everyone involved is very upset about this - not least because we just came off such a great run in Europe and were chomping at the bit to jump straight into our American tour. Again, please accept our apologies.

We will try and make up for this later in the year. In the meantime, the dates below all still stand. We have been getting a fair few e-mails askng why we're not playing certain cities; the answer is that, as with the European tour, this is just a brief tour to introduce the new album in select cities and we expect to be back out in the States very soon on a more extensive run.

06/12 - Phoenix, AZ - Rhythm Room

06/13 - San Deigo, CA - Casbah

Packing Things Up...

This from Anthony Roman, June 5

"Just wrapped up our European tour. Have to say it was great to be back and there were plenty of highlights-Greece with New Order (who by the way played so many old songs it was ridiculous! Ceremony!), London at Cargo where we were joined by producer Jagz Kooner for a rousing 'this is not a test' which he is also about to remix, Immergut festival with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Art Brut, Santiago Spain, and many others. We will be back for some festival dates and a proper run soon. In just a couple of days we will be heading out on a US tour. We will be stopping by the Carson Daly show and recording sessions at a bunch of radio stations: The Edge in Dallas, KEXP in Seattle, and WOXY in Cincinatti among them. More news on the way."

The picture below is from our show in Cologne on May 24, taken by Peter Szymanski. There are more live photos from Peter over at the Photos section of the site. The Cologne show was televised; we'll let you know when it airs.

Enemies Like This

Our new album, "Enemies Like This," will be out on Astralwerks on May 16. The album will be preceded by a single for the title track. The b-sides for the single include a re-recording of our 2001 b-side, "Caroline," an acoustic rendition and a real gem of a remix done by our very own Gerard Garone (under the name Culture Cheat). Further remixes coming down the pike will be by everyone's new favorite from the UK, Hot Chip, and our old friend Tim Goldsworthy (DFA). Also, look for our video that we are shooting with Piper Ferguson this week.Coincidentally, our original recording of "Caroline," just got picked up for a Nike World Cup commercial featuring England player Wayne Rooney. You can see the ad here.

On April 14, the DFA is releasing a compilation of their remixes, including their remix of "Dance to the Underground."European dates have been announced and we would like to announce that we have a new agent over there, Mr. Mike Greek at Helter Skelter. Our short trek through Europe and the UK will find us doing three festivals, playing with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs in Germany, Placebo in Spain and New Order in Greece. After that we will be doing dates in the US. Those shows will be announced later.
